If you’re traveling in the north country fair
Where the winds hit heavy on the borderline
Remember me to one who lives there
She once was the true love of mine.
If you go when the snowflakes storm
When the rivers freeze and summer ends
Please see if she’s a coat so warm
To keep her from the howlin’ winds.
Please see if her hair hangs long
If it rolls and flows all down her breast
Please see from me if her hair hangs long
That’s the way I remember her best.
I’m a-wonderin’ if she remember me at all
Many times I’ve often prayed
In the darkness of my night
In the brightness of my day.
So if you’re travelin’ in the north country fair
Where the winds hit heavy on the borderline
Remember me to one who lives there
She once was a true love of mine.

It’s my birthday today. It’s raining and beautifully stormy in Brooklyn. Waking up to this weather with nowhere to be is one of my favorite things in life. Maybe it’s my Washingtonian spirit that has stuck with me through years away from the Pacific Northwest. I’m cozily tucked away in my living room and Bob Dylan’s masterpiece of a song Girl From North Country is on repeat today. Birthdays are always a wonderful time for reflection. Hazelnut coffee brewing in honor of my late grandfather. Hope everyone’s having a beautiful day out there!

Thank you. Can’t wait to see this in person!
Bad blogger…..
Apparently blogging is supposed to happen on a more regular basis than once every two months. Apparently…I’m not a very good blogger. So here’s my first attempt at saying something besides blasting an announcement….
It’s spring time and I feel like we never even got a winter here in NYC. Not that I’m complaining though it does worry me. Needless to say, time is flying by. So far this year has been a blast. As I’m venturing into the touring folk musician world, I’m finding that some of the nicest people in the world play folk-y music. Folk Alliance 2012 in Memphis was overwhelming and amazing. My bandmates got sick which was a huge bummer but ironically we played some of our best shows trying to suppress sneezing and coughing throughout the sets. We made some great new friends and learned so much about what to do next.
I’ve also been spending the spring time teaching a bunch! I’m really in love with teaching students of all ages piano, singing, guitar and especially songwriting. I held a songwriting workshop in Lansing, MI at the Ruhala Performing Arts Center and it was a very rewarding experience. The students were incredible and so open and giving with their work. It didn’t turn into too much of a therapy session, though I love when it goes that route as well. :)
Speaking of what to do next (referencing the paragraph before with my jumping thoughts)…. I found out I am a New Folk Finalist for Kerrville Folk Festival’s 2012 contest! (http://www.kerrville-music.com/) I’m pretty excited. I’ve been hearing about this festival and songwriting contest for awhile now and really never imagined that I’d actually be a finalist. One thing I have to say I’m nervous about is camping for a week on a Texas Ranch. I’ve never gone camping before. Ever. I’ve only slept in a tent in my friends back yard and probably snuck back inside in the middle of the night.
After that…I’m going to Miles of Music Camp (http://www.milesofmusiccamp.com/)! My good friend Kristin Andreassen started this camp with her friend Laura Cortese. They’re both accomplished and talented musicians and had the great idea that there needed to be a camp that incorporated traditional roots music as well as songwriting. It’s on a private island on Lake Winnipesaukee, NH. There are incredible teachers like Dawn Landes, Chas Justus, Kristin and Laura of course, Stefan Amidon, Jefferson Hamer, and many other talented musicians. Again, I will be roughing it more than I am used to but I think it’s time I put my money where my mouth is…(that is the correct saying right?) I fancy myself a country girl that’s choosing to be in the city but I’m afraid I’m not as rustic as I may think.
And thennnnnnn…..we’re going on tour! My trio and I will be heading down south to play some of my favorite places like Nashville, Knoxville, and the nation’s capital, as well as some new spots like Atlanta, GA! keep your eyes peeled for dates which are slowly making their way onto my website. www.michaelaanne.com
Okay how’s that for a blog entry?
